Prayers, fasting mark Good Friday in Kerala

With day-long prayers, fasting and penance, Christians in the state observed Good Friday today, recalling the sufferings and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Shunning all earthly pleasures, the faithful spent the day in churches and homes praying, meditating and reading passages from the Bible relating to the final hours of Christ.

In many places, Ways-of-the-Cross processions were taken out symbolically depicting the journey of Jesus to the site of Crucifixion at Golgotha, wearing the Crown-of-Thorns and bearing the heavy wooden Cross.

Hundreds of devout trekked to Kurisumdi hill in Malayattoom in Central Kerala, a Christian pilgrim spot believed to have been blessed with the visit of St Thomas the Apostle, who brought Christianity to Kerala.
