Royal family launches portal

The Poonjar Royal Family, claiming ownership of the Kannan Devan Hills of Munnar, yesterday launched a portal www.Munnarlandlords.Com, providing details on their ownership rights over 1,37,600 acres of land in the hills, at a function here. Speaking to reporters here, P Sundar Rajan, on behalf of the Royal Family, said that Revathinal Kanakamani Thampuratty of the Poonjar Royal Family claimed that the royal family was the absolute landlord.

John Daniel Munroe, the Travancore Government's Commissioner had entered into a lease agreement with Poonjattil Koickal Rohini Thirunal Kerala Varma Valiya Raja in 1877, who claimed to be the land owner, by paying a security deposit of British Rs 5000 and with an annual rent of Rs 3000.

Alleging that Tata tea had violated the lease agreement by denying the landlord has title, he said 'under the Transfer of Property Act, tenant's denial of its landlord's title constitutes direct repudiation of lessee-lessor relationship and determination of lease by the lessee itself'.

A lawyer notice to Tata Tea Limited on January 7, 2007 terminating the lease and demanding Tata Tea surrender vacant possession of the land, plantation and buildings within 14 days from date of receipt of notice which it received was issued, he said.

Kanakamani Thampuratty had filed a suit for recovery of possession before the Munsiff court at Devikulam on March 28, 2008 for and on behalf of her family, he said.
