Washington, D.C. -7 May 2025, travelers who don’t have an ID that is REAL ID compliant are still allowed to board domestic flights as of now according to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. However, passengers must be ready in advance for extra screening processes at security checkpoints in airports.

In a press release on Monday the Secretary Mayorkas stated that, while the implementation of the REAL ID requirement is an issue of paramount importance however, it is expected that the TSA is continuing to recognize other types for ID up to the point of no notice. The move is intended to reduce travel disruptions prior to the summer season, while acknowledging continuing delays in REAL IDs issued by the state level.

What is a REAL ID?

An REAL ID is a federally regulated driver’s license, also known as an identification card that is compliant with higher security standards set up following the attacks of 9/11. It is eventually required to be carried on domestic flights as well as enter some federal facilities.

Despite the initial 2020 deadline however, DHS has repeatedly delayed its deadline to 2020. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has repeatedly delayed full enforcement — the most recent time being May 7th 2025 because of COVID-19 backlogs and logistical challenges.

What This Means for Travelers

At present, travelers who do not have a REAL ID can still be able to:

•   Military IDs

•   State-issued IDs aren’t REAL ID-compliant

However, these travelers must arrive earlier than the norm due to the possibility that they will be subject to identification verification by hand or a more thorough TSA security screening.

 “We’re committed to maintaining national security without creating unnecessary burdens for travelers,” Mayorkas declared.

Final Deadline Still Looming

While there is still some flexibility available, DHS reiterates that the deadline for REAL IDs will soon be fully in effect and urges users to have their IDs updated whenever feasible to avoid any future issues.
