Actor and Film Academy Chairman Premkumar has sharply criticized certain Malayalam TV serials, describing them as dangerous as endosulfan poison. Speaking to the media in Kochi, Premkumar stressed that serials, like films and web series, influence a large audience, and if they go wrong, they could lead the public astray.
“I’ve said this many years ago. It’s not that all serials are bad, but some serials are more harmful than endosulfan. Therefore, some regulations are needed. The responsibility to handle this should be taken up by those involved in the art. Discussions are ongoing about how practical an intentional censorship system would be,” Premkumar said.
Premkumar, who believes that artists should have unrestricted creative freedom, pointed out that while censorship exists in films, it does not in television serials. He also mentioned the practical issues related to censorship in serials. “Back then, what was shot would be shown the same day, and there is no time for censorship,” he noted.
Meanwhile, he expressed concern about the impact of serials, especially on children, as they become accustomed to seeing these shows. “Children growing up with such content may begin to believe that this is how life and human relationships are,” Premkumar said. He urged those responsible for creating content to take this responsibility seriously.
In response to Premkumar’s remarks, actor Dharmajan Bolgatty sharply criticized him. Dharmajan, who also started his career through serials, commented, “When someone gets a position, they forget their roots. I have written three mega serials, and I’m proud of that. Premkumar, who called serials ‘endosulfan,’ is someone who came through serials. When you get a position, it seems like you forget everything. Some people live a life of humility, don’t they?” Dharmajan added.
The matter has now escalated into a major controversy, and it remains to be seen how it will unfold.”
