Why Does the numbering of car batteries play Ping Pong?

Imagine you are all ready to go on a road trip. You have snacks, an awesome playlist and then… Bam! Your car won’t start. Maybe you are super organized and monitor your battery but the numbers jump up and down as if they’re auditioning to be on a trampoline squad. What’s going on? Grab a cup of coffee and let me explain it to you one by one.

Why Your battery can’t seem chill

Batteries, bless their little hearts of electrical power, can be temperamental. Car batteries can act in a variety of ways.

1. Like your ex, you can be hot and cold

Batteries hate extremes.

  • Warm Weather : Consider the battery fluid to be a refreshing drink. When the battery fluid gets too warm, it evaporates. No juice = no energy.
  • Cold Weather – Ever tried to work while it was freezing cold? Batteries also feel cold. Low temperatures slow their chemical reaction, so they deliver energy as slowly as when you text in the morning.

How To Help: Give Your Battery A Comfortable Home. Parking in the shade is best when it is hot. In winter, you can park it in your garage or under a cover. Batteries deserve cozy spaces too.

2. The Alternator Drama

It is the best friend of your battery. It charges your battery as you are driving. Sometimes, even the most loving relationships can get rocky.

  • When the alternator goes overboard, the battery will act hyper.
  • It’s easy to forget about it, and your battery becomes undercharged.

How you can help: Regular alternator checkups are like couples counseling, but for cars.

3. Short drives are like catnaps

When you drive only short distances, such as to the store or school to pick up the kids, your battery is never recharged. This is like trying to get through a whole day with only a two minute nap.

Helpful Tips: Go for a drive every now and then. Your battery must be able to move around and recharge.

4. Power Vampires

Ever left your lights on overnight? You and me both. It’s possible that even when everything seems to be off, some devices or systems are still sucking up your battery energy. Like leaving the door of your fridge slightly open, it’s not dramatic but enough to drain the battery.

What to do: Before locking the car, make it a habit to check that all lights are off. You can also ask a friend to check for power vampires if you continue to notice drains.

5. Old batteries = old bones

Just like us, batteries don’t stay young forever. Most batteries reach retirement age after 3 to 5 years. These batteries also stop holding charge, and random ups-and-downs become more common.

Helpful Tips: Do not push your battery if it has reached “senior citizens” status. Replace it now before you find yourself stranded on the side of the road with a dead battery.

6. A Crud Battery Is Just Gross

The corrosion is the flaky crusty material you may have seen on battery terminals or cables. This corrosion is not only unsightly (because, ew), it can also disrupt the power flow.

Helpful Tips: Combine baking soda with some water and give it a good scrub. Clean terminals = Happy battery. Wear gloves and don’t forget to clean the terminals!

Be Your Battery’s Bestie

If your car’s battery could talk, it would tell you what to do to keep its health.

  1. Have a look at me! Do regular maintenance. It’s worth a quick checkup.
  2. When I am alone, use a charger.
If your car will be parked for weeks on end, you should get a trickle or battery charger to avoid feeling abandoned.
  3. Don’t Overwork Me.
No headlights on, no heaters, and please, no loud music or heated seats without the engine running. I have to keep the car running in order to stay charged.
  4. Gadgets that track my mood.
Install a Battery Monitor or grab a Voltmeter. I’m happy if my voltage readings are between 12.4-12.9V with the engine off and 13.7-14.7V with the engine running.

You may need backup

You should call a professional if your battery continues to behave like a toddler when it is napping. This could be a deeper issue, such as faulty wiring, an alternator that’s not working, or even just bad luck.

Wrapping up

The battery in your car isn’t out to ruin you. It is doing the best it can in a world filled with obstacles, such as bad weather, short journeys, and sneaky energy drains. It can be kept steady and reliable with some extra TLC.

Consider your battery to be a good friend who is always there for you. Give it a rest, clean it, and treat it right. If your battery is in good shape, so will your car, and you’ll have fewer headaches. Have a safe trip, and may the battery numbers on your car remain boring.
