Actress Sona Nair, who has made a mark in both films and serials, remains best known for certain standout characters in her career. One such defining role was Kunnummal Shanta in the 2005 Mohanlal-starrer Naran, directed by Joshiy. However, Sona recently revealed her disappointment over the editing of crucial scenes involving her character, which she felt diminished the character’s depth and impact in the final cut.
“Kunnummal Shanta’s character lacked completeness in the final version of the film. During the shoot, the character had full depth, but the final release didn’t reflect that. Key scenes introducing Shanta, portraying her traits, and her impactful ending were edited out. What you see in the film isn’t the same Kunnummal Shanta we shot,” said Sona.
Despite this, Sona expressed gratitude for the appreciation she continues to receive for the role. “I’m thankful when people still talk about Shanta. But deep down, I feel saddened. I wonder how people would have received the character if they had seen the complete version,” she added. She also acknowledged that many similar roles came her way after Naran.
Sona went on to share her thoughts on dealing with negative comments, particularly on social media. “Many people form opinions without even watching the film—just by looking at its posters. I’ve faced criticism, especially for my role in the short film Kapalik. Facebook is where the harshest comments appear, so I stopped using it. Instagram feels slightly better. I no longer let negative comments drain my energy,” she said, adding that such comments often stem from people’s frustrations.
Fans of the movie have started discussions around Sona’s revelations, expressing curiosity about the edited portions and lamenting the missed potential of her character.
