Bengaluru 22 April 2025 In a significant announcement made by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed that India will launch 150 satellites in 3 years and will have a specific goal to improve the border as well as coastal security.
The proposal, which was endorsed with ISRO Chair Dr. S. Somanath, signals an important step towards using space technology to boost national security and to monitor vulnerable areas along India’s vast coastline and land.
Strategic Push for National Security
In his speech at The Space Tech Conference in Bengaluru the Dr. Somanath stated,
“We are initiating the deployment of a constellation of 150 satellites aimed at real-time imaging, communication, and environmental monitoring for India’s defence and security forces.”
This satellite network will be used by many agencies, such as:
-
Indian Army
-
Indian Navy
-
Coast Guard
-
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
Why Border and Coastal Surveillance?
With more than 15,000 kms of bordering land and 7500 kilometers of coast, India faces multiple problems in the field of surveillance, such as pirates who are illegally infiltrating the maritime sector as well as environmental dangers.
This satellite initiative is aimed at:
-
Give high-resolution images of the borders
-
Monitor unauthorized coastal activity

-
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) reconnaissance satellites
-
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payloads
-
Nano and Micro satellites
-
Geo-stationary satellites for communication
Launches will be held starting from Sriharikota as well as the newly constructed Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport in Tamil Nadu.
International Context
The Indian move is part of an international trend in which countries such as China, the United States, China as well as Israel have begun taking advantage of satellite constellations to provide surveillance of environmental and security.
According to an report from SpaceNews SpaceNews, satellite constellations are now essential to monitor geopolitical zones.
ISRO’s Growing Role in Security Tech
ISRO typically focused on civil and scientific missions, has been increasingly moving towards the realm of strategic application. Projects such as the RISAT, EMISAT as well as Cartosat are already serving military requirements.
This satellite mission marks the official transition into operational security operations that are space-based.
Timeline & Budget
-
The first group of satellites in Q3 2025
-
Complete deployment 2027: By the 2027’s end
-
estimated Budget 12,000 crore
The mission is supported by private space-based startups in the IN-SPACe initiative that is aligned with India’s ambition to become an leading space technology company in the world.
Final Word
Through the deployment of 150 satellites over three months, India is setting the foundation for an new modern era of national defense that is space-based. From the detection of intruders in the sea to managing maritime risk This initiative will strengthen India’s position as a strategic player within the region.
