Veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran the proud mother of actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Indrajith Sukumaran, has always been vocal about her family and their achievements. Having single-handedly raised her sons after the untimely demise of her husband Sukumaran, Mallika played a crucial role in shaping their careers.

Now, she has come forward to defend her granddaughter Prarthana, the daughter of Indrajith and Poornima, who has been under social media scrutiny for her choice of attire. Prarthana, known for her lively presence on social media with singing and dancing videos, faced criticism for wearing torn jeans and sleeveless outfits.

Mallika Sukumaran, in her characteristic bold style, addressed the critics, stating,
“If Prarthana’s torn pants and sleeveless tops are not an issue for her father or mother, why should it matter to others? Clothing is a personal choice. That child is 16 years old now. Tomorrow, if Poornima wears the same, let her. Indrajith has no objection, and neither does Prarthana’s mother. Then why should I have an issue? She’s just a child. When studying abroad in London, it’s common to wear such clothes. Nobody questions it there. People are aware of the attire in foreign countries, aren’t they? Prarthana also wears sarees. It’s all a matter of personal preference.”

Mallika also pointed out the changing societal norms and fashion trends:
“When attending any gathering, critics will always be present. Let’s say tomorrow I decide to wear jeans and a shirt. People would immediately ask, ‘Oh, what’s wrong with her? She seemed fine until last week.’ I grew up here, never traveled abroad, and followed traditional attire when I was young. Back then, I wore half-sarees after the ninth grade. Do you see anyone wearing half-sarees today? Times change, and so do fashions. If there’s anything inappropriate, her parents will address it.”

Her unapologetic stance has resonated with many fans, who have lauded her for standing up for her granddaughter and addressing societal double standards. Mallika’s words reflect her belief in individual freedom and the importance of adapting to evolving times.
