“Simhasanam”: Behind-the-Scenes Drama and Producer’s Revelations

Simhasanam, directed by Shaji Kailas and starring Prithviraj, was released in 2012 with high expectations. However, the film turned out to be a box office failure. Recently, the producer, S. Chandrakumar, opened up about the challenges and behind-the-scenes conflicts during the film’s production in a YouTube interview. His revelations have sparked widespread discussions on social media.

The producer revealed that ego clashes between writer S.N. Swamy and director Shaji Kailas caused significant delays and mental stress. Initially conceived as a spiritual sequel to Naduvazhikal, the film’s production began with a puja ceremony in Muscat. However, disagreements between the key creative team escalated.

“Every day was a struggle. I was constantly running around to resolve issues. Even during my sister’s wedding, I was called back to Ernakulam to handle disputes,” said Chandrakumar.He shared that Shaji Kailas was instrumental in ensuring the project moved forward, despite the challenges. Ranjith, another renowned filmmaker, had offered to help rewrite parts of the climax but ultimately did not intervene. The producer also admitted that he was not satisfied with the lead actress’s casting, which he claimed was entirely the director’s decision.

Chandrakumar praised Prithviraj for stepping in to complete the film, even when he was aware of the difficulties surrounding the project.

“Prithviraj agreed to do Simhasanam only to support me and save me from financial ruin. I owe him a lot for that,” Chandrakumar remarked.

The producer revealed that the film caused him a financial loss of nearly ₹2 crores and left him deeply disappointed. Despite these setbacks, he expressed gratitude toward Prithviraj and acknowledged his dedication to the project.
