“I Am Not Against Serials, Nor Have I Ruined Anyone’s Livelihood”: Prem Kumar

Kerala State Film Academy Vice Chairman Prem Kumar clarified that he has not outrightly criticized television serials, addressing the controversy triggered by his earlier statement, “Some serials are more toxic than endosulfan.” His remarks had drawn criticism from AATMA, the association of Malayalam television actors.

Responding to AATMA, Prem Kumar stated, “I have not criticized serials indiscriminately. My critique was aimed at improving content quality. I have not disrupted anyone’s livelihood. My intention is to encourage better content, and I will continue to express my opinions. It’s essential to address these issues thoughtfully.”

He added, “When someone says a cow has given birth, it doesn’t mean you should immediately start making rope. I wasn’t even aware of AATMA’s open letter against me.” Prem Kumar made his original comments about serial content during a press conference in Kochi, clarifying, “Not all serials deserve condemnation. I believe artists should have the freedom to express themselves without restrictions. While films undergo censorship, television serials do not, which presents practical challenges, as episodes are often shot and aired on the same day.”

Prem Kumar expressed concerns about the potential impact of serials on family dynamics and future generations, saying, “Television serials enter family living rooms, shaping the perspectives of children growing up watching them. They might come to believe this is how relationships or life should be. Those handling artistic mediums must take responsibility for the content they create.”

In response, actor and Congress activist Dharmajan Bolgatty criticized Prem Kumar’s comments. Writing on Facebook, Dharmajan said, “Prem Kumar himself started his career through serials. Just because he now holds a position doesn’t mean he should grow horns. Let the poor earn their livelihood, brother.”

Dharmajan added, “I’ve written three mega serials, and I’m proud of that. Calling serials ‘endosulfan’ is ironic, coming from someone who rose to prominence through serials. A position doesn’t give anyone the right to demean others.”
