“Arrive at Airports 3 hours before departure” India tightens air security amid Border Tensions With Pakistan

While tensions rage across the border between Pakistan and India Authorities in India have increased security measures for flights across the country. A new advisory is urging travelers to arrive at airports at least 3 hours prior to the time they are scheduled to depart especially for domestic flights as security checks are likely to be more thorough and lengthy.

Why the Sudden Security Boost?

The increase in procedures for air travel follows rising geopolitical tensions in the region between India as well as Pakistan. Based on intelligence inputs there is an greater perception of threats that has led defense and aviation agencies to secure airport perimeters as well as screening procedures for passengers and coordination of air traffic control.

Airports located in states bordering the border like Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Gujarat are reported to be in high alert and have more CISF personnel on the ground and baggage check-ins for random passengers are intensified.

What This Means for Travelers

People traveling from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Amritsar must:

  •   Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours prior to departure so that you do not miss flights

  •   Restrict carry-on bags to accelerate screening

  •   Work With security personnel to complete additional steps to verify your identity.

  •      Do not make last-minute reservations or check-ins

International Flights Also Under Scrutiny

While the advisory mainly affects flights within the United States, international flights aren’t exempt. Authorities have indicated an extended immigration screening and increased biometric screening and stricter verification of visas at every international terminal.

Airlines have also been instructed to notify passengers ahead of time via email and SMS regarding updated reporting times as well as security guidelines.

 No Compromise on National Safety

A top official of the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated:

“These are precautionary steps to ensure passenger safety amid regional tensions. The situation is being closely monitored, and measures will be revised as necessary.”

The government also works in conjunction with the state police as well as central intelligence agencies as well as the Indian Air Force to ensure that the airspace remains safe and unaffected.
