As Competition Heats Up, Meta CTO Says 2025 Crucial Year for Its AR/VR Business

As competition grows, Meta CTO says 2025 important year for its AR/VR business Meta’s chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth, has declared that 2025 is a pivotal time for Meta’s expansive move into the realm of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). In a comprehensive update that was posted on the official blog of Meta and repeated at briefings for journalists, Bosworth outlined the strategic risks as competitors like Apple, Google, and Microsoft accelerate the expansion of their respective immersive technology ecosystems.

“This year will define the next decade of spatial computing,” Bosworth said.

Meta’s AR/VR Strategy Under Pressure

Meta The company, which was previously Facebook, has invested hundreds of millions each year to the Reality Labs division, which is responsible for AR as well as VR development. Despite revolutionary devices such as that of the Meta Quest 3 along with the hype surrounding Meta’s soon-to-be released VR glasses however, Meta has been stung by mounting criticism for its slow consumer adoption and a lack of clarity on the monetization.

While competition is growing:

  •   Its Vision Pro is growing in the high-end space for enterprises

  •   Google is working to refine it’s Project Iris platform

  •   Startups such as Magic Leap are partnering with the healthcare and defense sectors

Meta’s leadership is of the opinion that if they don’t achieve significant consumer acceptance or integration into the enterprise by 2025 their first-mover advantage may be eroded.

2025 Product Pipeline and Milestones

Bosworth confirmed that several important landmarks are planned for 2025:

  •   Next-gen Meta AR glasses prototype for developers

  •   Major software updates for Horizon OS

  •   AI-powered enhancements to VR education and meetings

  •   Developer tools to create mixed-reality content and persistence of objects

As per The Verge, Meta is also working with app developers from third parties to create real-world use applications that go beyond gaming, such as remotely-based collaboration and medical training and visualization of architecture.

A Shift Toward Utility, Not Just Entertainment

Meta’s CTO stated that the company’s shift in focus is in the direction of entertainment first to utilitarian use cases. This is in line with a larger market trend in which immersive technology is now a part of everyday workflows.

“AR/VR can’t just be cool — it needs to be essential,” Bosworth said. Bosworth.
He also suggested more integrated connection to Meta AI which allows people to use digital overlays on a more contextual basis.

Final Thoughts

With competition heating up, Meta’s CTO declares that 2025 will be an important year for the AR/VR business and rightfully so. With increasing competition from Apple and increasing demands for real-world XR software, Meta’s time for dominance is closing. The question of whether Meta will be able to capitalize on its initial investments or slip further behind will likely be clear over the coming twelve months.
