Doha former U.S. President Donald Trump is well-known for his bold statements on diplomatic issues is once more claiming the credit for decreasing tensions between India and Pakistan This occasion was during a major event held in Qatar.
At a closed-door meeting which was later revealed through leaks to the media, Trump said,
“Back in the days of my generation there were a lot of conflict in the region between India as well as Pakistan. I came in and things calmed down. No one gives us credit for this.”
It’s not the first moment that Trump has made this declaration. In his time as president, particularly in the year of 2019 Trump repeatedly offered his support to “mediate” between the two nuclear-armed neighbors — a proposal which sparked fierce reactions both in New Delhi and Islamabad.
A Familiar Claim, A Complex Reality

Trump’s latest comments are widely viewed as part of his continuing attempt to assert his international credentials when he considers his 2020 U.S. Presidential race. However, specialists on South Asian affairs say the peace process between India and Pakistan is comprised of several layers and that any brief period of peace can’t be attributed to any one individual.
The political analyst Dr. Ayesha Khan said in Art Kerala,
“Trump’s claim is appealing on the surface but in reality the equation between India and Pakistan is driven by a complicated combination of internal political and military strategies, and public opinion. There is no way that a U.S. president can simply enter and “settle” the issue.”
India’s Response: No Official Reaction Yet

At present, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not yet responded to Trump’s latest remarks. However, in the past India has repeatedly stated that all matters pertaining with Pakistan have been bilateral and do not require mediation from outside.
In the year 2019, then Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was blunt in his response to Trump’s mediation proposal declaring,
“No such request was submitted by the Prime Minister Modi. India has always maintained its position that all issues involving Pakistan are dealt with bilaterally.”
Pakistan’s Stance: Previously Welcoming
In contrast to India, Pakistan had been awed by Trump’s remarks earlier in the sense that they were an opportunity to make international progress on this Kashmir issue. The time was when Prime Minister Imran Khan was pleased with Trump’s willingness to join in.
With the change of leaders and shifting geopolitical alliances Islamabad has not issued any announcement as a response to President Trump’s recent Qatar speech.
Geopolitics and the US Role in South Asia
The United States has historically played a pivotal role within South Asia — supplying arms to both India as well as Pakistan and maintaining good economic and diplomatic relations with both.
However, Trump’s style was distinct: loud, transactional and savvy to the media. While some people found it refreshing while others viewed it as disruptive.
What’s Next?
With Trump looking to run for his White House, statements like those will likely to remain. If they are true or not, they will be noticed. an impact on the international scene they are sure to attract attention, especially in areas like South Asia, in which U.S. involvement is always scrutinized closely.
