Pawars Together Again: Is the NCP Heading for a Surprise Merger?

Mumbai 13 May 2025 -in Indian politics there is no finality. On Sunday night in Mumbai the eternal truth was heard louder than ever before when Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar -cousins and uncles mentor and protégée who became rivalsand stood again.

There aren’t any fiery speeches. No drama. Only two leaders on the same stage in a peaceful silence that was a loud voice. Then, talks of a potential NCP merger was a major topic of discussion in Maharashtra’s politics circles.

The Family That Split, Might Stitch Itself Back Together

If you’re not a huge fan of politics, here’s a short background about the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was once a tightly knit group, headed by the veteran Sharad Pawar. However, in 2023 the NCP was split in two after Ajit Pawar split off and joined the BJP.

The group split. The symbol was adopted. Loyalties divided. Many believed that it would be the end for Pawar’s legacy. Pawar tradition as it was know it.

However, in Indian politics families are a major factor — and, now as both men are spotted together at an event, people are beginning to question: is the feud over?

What Was Said — And What Wasn’t

In the course of the evening Both Pawars did not engage in any discussion of the past. However, it was what they did not say that drew the attention of everyone.

“Differences occur in every family. But the progress of Maharashtra is always our shared aim,” Ajit Pawar said while Sharad Pawar sitting silently beside his.

The report did not mention any “merger.” No confirmation. However, there was no denial.

Why This Moment Feels Bigger Than It Looks

Analysts in the political world believe this reunion may not be random and may be part of a larger strategy in anticipation of Maharashtra’s coming Assembly Elections.

Here’s why:

  •   A unification of the NCP will not split votes and gives it more bargaining ability.

  •   Grassroots activists from both sides are believed to be calling for to unite.

  •   The Pawar family might have realised that division in the public sphere has cost them politicallyas well as emotionally.

“This isn’t a mere political issue. The issue is about the legacy of respect as well as healing” an experienced NCP employee said to artkerala.com on the fringes.

What Happens Now?

Of course sharing a stage does not necessarily mean having a partyat least not yet. There are some hurdles to overcome:

  •      Ideological changes

  •      Negotiations for leadership

  •   And, most important, whether BJP or Congress reacts to this proximity

For now, supporters are optimistic. The former NCP strong and united, as well as deep-rooted within Maharashtra’s political system could be heading back to its roots.

If it does happen it will be among the most shocking political reunions that have occurred in recent history.
