Thangalaan, the big-budget Tamil historical action drama starring the stylish star Chiyaan Vikram, is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pa. Ranjith. Written by Pa. Ranjith and Tamil Prabha, the film generated significant hype before its release, with promotional events going viral on social media.
Released in theaters globally on August 15, the movie, however, fell short of expectations, receiving mixed reviews from audiences. This lukewarm reception impacted its box office performance. After a wait of several months, the film is now available for streaming on OTT platforms. As of midnight yesterday, Thangalaan began streaming on Netflix, four months after its theatrical release. Interestingly, the release happened without any prior announcement. The movie is accessible in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
Produced under the banners of Studio Green and Neelam Productions by K.E. Gnanavel Raja and Pa. Ranjith, Thangalaan is inspired by true events that took place during the British era in Karnataka’s Kolar Gold Fields. Despite its multi-language release, the movie failed to create a major impact at the box office, grossing only around ₹105 crore.
However, Vikram’s performance in the film received widespread acclaim. The cast also includes Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy, Harikrishnan Anbudurai, Preethi Karan, and Muthukumar in key roles.
