Valliettan Faces Backlash Over Politically Incorrect Dialogue

The 2000 Malayalam blockbuster Valliettan, starring Mammootty, recently returned to theaters in a 4K remastered version. While the re-release has been well-received, some of the film’s content has sparked discussions on social media, particularly regarding politically incorrect dialogue.

A specific line where Mammootty’s character, Valliettan, addresses his differently-abled younger brother Monkuttan (played by Sudheesh) has drawn criticism. The dialogue—“Just three feet above sea level, with no proper physique”—has been called insensitive by many viewers. Critics argue that such remarks, even if intended as humor, are inappropriate, especially when directed at a differently-abled character.

The criticism doesn’t stop there. Another character, played by Siddique, refers to Monkuttan as “Njondi” (limper) in the film, which some viewers found offensive and indicative of body shaming.

Supporters of the film argue that it reflects the attitudes of the time when it was made and should be viewed in that context. However, many believe such content feels outdated and distasteful in today’s social climate, where inclusivity and sensitivity are given more importance.

Valliettan’s Legacy and Potential Sequel

Despite the controversy, Valliettan was a massive hit during its original release and remains a fan favorite. Directed by Shaji Kailas with a script by Ranjith, the movie tells a story of family bonds and action-packed drama.

Interestingly, director Shaji Kailas has hinted at the possibility of a sequel. He revealed that producers are interested in revisiting the story, with the potential for Dulquer Salmaan (Mammootty’s son) to play a grown-up version of Valliettan’s son. The script is reportedly in early stages, and production may begin if Mammootty approves the concept.

Social Media Debate

While the sequel news excites fans, the discourse surrounding Valliettan highlights how perspectives on storytelling have evolved over the years. In particular, dialogue that might have been acceptable two decades ago is now scrutinized for its impact on marginalized communities.

For now, the film continues to spark both nostalgia and conversation as it enjoys its renewed run in theaters.
