Shobana a name etched in the hearts of Malayali cinephiles, has an irreplaceable position in Malayalam cinema. Known for her stellar performances, especially during the golden era of the 1990s, Shobana gained legendary status with films like Manichitrathazhu, where her portrayal of Ganga and Nagavalli remains iconic. However, towards the late 90s, she gradually stepped back from acting, redirecting her focus toward her passion for classical dance.
Recently, Shobana reflected on her career decisions and shared insights about her journey. Speaking about her brief hiatus from cinema, she revealed that she had been approached for the movie Drishyam, with the script even sent to her. However, she turned down the offer as she was already committed to a film by Vineeth Sreenivasan at the time“I’ve only watched the Hindi remake of Manichitrathazhu, and it was beautifully crafted to suit that era. Priyadarshan is someone who never gets it wrong,” she said, lauding her mentor.
Recollecting her early days, Shobana shared a poignant memory from her debut:
“My first remuneration was ₹500, but someone stole it. My parents cried because they had saved that money, and it was taken away.”Shobana also spoke fondly about her experiences working with legends like Mammootty and Mohanlal.“Mammukka is someone who maintains a certain distance, but he is extremely simple and practical. It took me a while to understand this about him. He is creative and highly focused on work, with nothing else clouding his mind. He’s also very open and straightforward in conversations.”
Reflecting on Mohanlal, she added:
“Mohanlal, on the other hand, is incredibly comfortable to work with. We’ve traveled a similar path in the industry, and our camaraderie feels familial.”Fans eagerly await Shobana’s upcoming film Tudikkum Karangal, directed by Tarun Murthy, where she will reunite with Mohanlal. Her last on-screen appearance was in the Telugu film Kalki Edi. With her unmatched grace and charisma, Shobana continues to inspire both as a performer and as an artist, leaving fans eagerly anticipating her next move.
