2024: A Successful Year for Malayalam Cinema with Several Hits

The year 2024 has been remarkable for Malayalam cinema, delivering several box office successes compared to previous years. With a total of 207 releases this year, the industry saw a slight dip in the number of films compared to 2023. However, the number of successful films increased, with 22 hits already recorded, including Manjummal Boys, Aavesham, and Premalu.

The Christmas season brought three more promising films—Rifle Club, Marko, and Edi, all of which received positive reviews. If these films join the hit chart, 2024 could conclude with 25 successful Malayalam movies.

Mammootty Scores Double Superhits

Mammootty emerged as a standout performer this year with two films making it to the superhit chart, while stars like Mohanlal and Dileep faced a lackluster year. Mohanlal’s sole release, Malaikottai Vaaliban, failed to secure a spot among the hits.

Top-Grossing Films of 2024

According to the Film Chamber’s evaluation based on theatrical revenue, 11 films, including Chidambaram’s Manjummal Boys, were declared superhits. Other successful titles include:
• Premalu
• Bhramayugam
• Aavesham
• Aadu Jeevitham
• Varshangalukku Shesham
• Guruvayur Ambala Nadaiyil
• Turbo
• Vaazha
• ARM
• Kishkindhakandam

Interestingly, most of these films were directed by young filmmakers, reflecting a shift in the industry.

Mixed Performance at the Box Office

While the hit count improved, the overall box office still incurred a reported loss of ₹1000 crore, as per industry estimates. Only a handful of films managed to recover their investment through television and OTT revenues. Around 150 movies were deemed commercial failures.

Notable Mentions

Other films that performed well but didn’t make it to the superhit chart include:
• Abraham Osler
• Anveshippin Kandethum
• Bougainvillea
• Hello Mummy
• Sookshmadarshini
• Pani

Average performers like Thalavan, Golam, Nunakkuzhi, Anchakalla Kokan, and Ullozhukkam also contributed to the year’s cinematic landscape.

As 2024 concludes, the industry gears up for 2025 with lessons learned and hopes of pushing creative and commercial boundaries even further.
