Archana Kavi, who became a household name with her debut movie Neelathamara in 2009, stepped away from the limelight after a brief but impactful stint in Malayalam cinema. Now, after a decade, she is making a strong comeback with Identity, where she plays the role of Tovino Thomas’ sister.
Why Did She Take a Long Break?
During the promotional event for Identity, Archana candidly addressed the question of her prolonged absence from the film industry:
“Nobody called me. It’s a silly question to ask an artist. I got married, then divorced, and later went through depression. I took time to recover from that. Now I’ve done this film, which took 10 years to happen. Doesn’t that explain the gap?”
In Identity, Archana plays Dr. Devika Shankar, a character she describes as a major milestone in her career. She expressed pride in her comeback and gratitude to directors Anas Khan and Akhil Paul for giving her the opportunity:“This is my first film after 10 years, and I’m so proud to call it my comeback. The dedication and research that Anas and Akhil put into their films are unparalleled. I’m grateful they made me a part of this project.”
Her First Time Dubbing
Another highlight of Identity is that it marks Archana’s first time dubbing for her own character.“In all these years, I never used my voice for my characters. It was the directors who encouraged me to dub for Devika, and I’m glad I did.”
Her Journey So Far
Archana made her debut in Neelathamara, directed by Lal Jose, and instantly became a favorite among Malayalam audiences. In 2015, she married stand-up comedian Abish Mathew and relocated to Mumbai. However, the couple parted ways in 2021. During her hiatus, Archana stayed active creatively through her YouTube channel, where she shared insights about her personal and professional life.In an earlier interview, Archana had opened up about her marriage and divorce, emphasizing the challenges she faced and the resilience she gained from those experiences. With Identity, Archana is stepping back into the industry, bringing along a decade of personal growth and renewed passion for acting.
