In a shrewdly worded declaration, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the King of the title of Puri and head of the service of Lord Jagannath is opposed to the recent designation of Digha’s brand new Jagannath Temple located in West Bengal as “Jagannath Dham.”

The king who was the titular one made it clear that the holy name “Jagannath Dham” is solely connected to Puri which is the oldest and first home of Lord Jagannath and among the Char Dham holy places that are revered in Hinduism.

“Jagannath Dham is a religious identity that is not just a geographical designation. The association with a different location reduces the sacredness of religion and the cultural traditions in Puri,” said Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb.

What’s the Controversy?

The issue stems from the recent opening ceremony of the magnificent Jagannath Temple in Digha the tourist destination along the coast in West Bengal. The temple, which was constructed with striking architectural resemblances to the old Puri Jagannath Temple is informally called ” Jagannath Dham Digha” in various promotional materials and reports in the media.

The name has sparked harsh critique from religious authorities as well as preservationists of the heritage from Odisha.

Religious and Historical Significance

Puri can be described as one of the four dhams of the sacred (Char Dham) in Hinduism along with Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram. The name “Jagannath Dham” is an eon-old tradition and is deeply rooted in the spiritual ritualistic, monarchy in Odisha.

The religious scholars have endorsed the Gajapati Maharaja’s assertion, saying that:

  •   Jagannath Dham is Puri both historically and spiritually.

  •   Any other use is untrue to the culture as well as legally unclear.

Legal and Cultural Implications

While temples are able to be built anyplace but the use of historical titles such as “Jagannath Dham” for locations beyond Puri might trigger legal investigation along with public resentment.

In an interview with ArtKerala.com, a member of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) said:

“We respect devotional initiatives, but branding must not misappropriate sacred identities.”

Social Media Reactions

The issue has sparked intense debate on social platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with hashtags such as #RespectJagannathDham and #PuriIdentity trending regionally.

The devotees of each Odisha along with West Bengal have taken varying opinions. Some have argued that it is important to keep Puri’s culture alive while others are welcoming their new Digha Temple as a brand new temple for worship.
