Mohanlal will not be returning to lead the film industry association, AMMA. He has informed the temporary committee that he is stepping down from the role of president. Mohanlal and the executive committee had previously resigned from their positions, accepting moral responsibility amid sexual harassment allegations against some members. Though it was initially announced that a general body meeting would be called within two months to hold elections, AMMA’s general body and elections will now take place in June. Until then, the temporary committee will be in charge. The general body usually meets every three years to elect new officials, with the last meeting in June deciding that Mohanlal would continue as president and electing Siddique and others.
In the 2021 election, Mohanlal and Edavela Babu were elected unopposed as president and general secretary, respectively. Mohanlal had already expressed that he would not seek another term. However, with Edavela Babu also stepping down after 25 years, the organization felt that losing both leaders would affect its functioning. Under pressure from colleagues, Mohanlal decided to continue, though he had stated he would not run if there was a contest.
Following the resignation of Mohanlal’s executive committee, the organization is in a state of uncertainty about its future direction. Former vice president Jayan Cherthala, after speaking with Mohanlal, expressed hope for a strong return, and Suresh Gopi also indicated the same in media statements. However, Mohanlal has now confirmed he is not interested in returning. He was re-elected as president in June for a second term.
Despite calls for him to continue, Mohanlal’s friends and family advised against taking up the role again, pointing out how he felt isolated as president during crises. Mohanlal’s friends and family have also felt that his involvement as AMMA’s president has dragged him, as both an actor and a person, into unwanted controversies.
