Kanguva, starring Suriya and directed by Siruthai Siva, is now the most loss-making South Indian film. Made on a budget of ₹280 crores, the film took nearly two and a half years to complete. Despite the hype, the movie has not achieved the expected success. A week after its release, it has only managed to earn ₹130 crores. As a result, Kanguva has surpassed all other South Indian films in terms of financial losses.
Previously, the top spot belonged to Prabhas’s Radhe Shyam. Released in 2022 with a budget of ₹350 crores, it earned only ₹165 crores, resulting in losses exceeding ₹130 crores for the producer. Prabhas returning a portion of his remuneration became a significant news story at the time.
Kanguva had sold its theatrical and non-theatrical rights for a substantial amount. However, the film has failed across all major regions, including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh-Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. For instance, the Kerala rights were sold for ₹10 crores, but the film has earned only ₹7 crores in the region so far.
In recent Kollywood history, big-budget films like Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 and Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan have also struggled to recover costs at the box office. On the other hand, Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time reportedly made profits in most regions except Kerala and North India, with a collection exceeding ₹400 crores globally.
Meanwhile, Suriya and director Siruthai Siva recently made a public appearance, visiting the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Ranipet. This marks their first appearance together after the release of Kanguva. Photos and videos from the temple visit have gone viral on social media, with comments like, “Now only God can save it.”
Regardless, Prabhas now holds second place, as Kanguva takes the unwanted title of the most loss-making South Indian film. Everyone is now wondering if this record will ever be broken.
