the Scene in Meesa Madhavan Where Dileep Steals Kavya’s Waist Chain: “I Stole It Too!”

Meesa Madhavan was a superhit movie starring Dileep and Kavya Madhavan, directed by Lal Jose. The film told the story of a thief’s life, and even today, audiences can watch it with the same excitement, which highlights the strength of its storytelling.

Every scene in Meesa Madhavan has left a lasting impression on viewers. Among them, a particularly memorable moment is when Dileep’s character Madhavan steals the waist chain (aranjanam) of Kavya’s character, Rukmini. Now, director Lal Jose has revealed that the idea for that iconic scene wasn’t entirely original—it was “stolen” from another source.

Lal Jose shared his thoughts:
“During the time I was working on a music album, I grew close to B.R. Prasad. At that time, he was scripting a movie called Chandrotsavam. Although efforts were made to turn it into a film, it didn’t materialize for some reason. While working on Meesa Madhavan after Randam Bhavam, Prasad and I often discussed both movies.

One of the scenes in Chandrotsavam featured a thief sneaking into a palace and stealing a sleeping princess’s waist chain. I found that scene incredibly captivating and asked Prasad if I could adapt it for Meesa Madhavan. He readily agreed, saying, ‘Go ahead and use it; my movie may not ever be made.’

Prasad had a unique storytelling style, and even Kamal Haasan was familiar with some elements of Chandrotsavam. In fact, certain scenes Prasad had envisioned were later used in Kamal Haasan’s films. But it was from Chandrotsavam that I got the idea for the waist chain theft scene in Meesa Madhavan.

Prasad was someone who could narrate stories with such grace and depth. He was also deeply knowledgeable about epics and folklore. I even worked with him on an advertisement album for Asianet, featuring stars like Suresh Gopi, Samyuktha Varma, Lal, Kavya Madhavan, and Jomol.”

With Lal Jose’s revelation, fans have now discovered the inspiration behind one of the most beloved scenes in Meesa Madhavan.
