Brutality Must Be Shown as It Is: Sabumon on Violence and Representation in Cinema

Actor and television personality Sabumon, known for his controversial statements, has sparked discussions with his recent comments on depicting violence and rape in cinema. In an interview with Kaumudy Movies, Sabumon emphasized that the intensity of violent acts must be portrayed realistically to drive home their severity.
Sabumon’s Perspective
According to Sabumon, portraying violent acts such as rape in a softened or aesthetically pleasing manner dilutes their gravity. He argued that such portrayals might even make the audience perceive them as acceptable or “sweet.” Sabumon stated:
•“Violence in films should be brutal because only then will people understand its severity. Showing acts like rape in a soft manner, with aesthetic touches, makes it appear palatable, which it is not.”
He elaborated that sanitized depictions of such acts fail to convey their inhumanity and might lead to a lack of understanding of their brutality. Instead, showing the raw and harsh realities of these actions could evoke fear and condemnation, discouraging similar behavior in society.
Cinematic Responsibility
Sabumon also touched on the restrictions filmmakers face, such as censorship on depicting violence or sensitive issues. He questioned how creative products could flourish under such conditions:
•“If we say no to showing rape, no to violence, how can we create impactful art? Violence must be shown as violence; a pedophile must be shown as they are. Without this, how will people understand the reality of such acts?”
Public and Industry Reactions
Sabumon’s remarks have ignited a debate within the film industry and among audiences. While some agree that cinema has the responsibility to reflect reality and provoke thought, others believe that certain depictions might normalize or desensitize audiences to such acts.
Sabumon’s Legacy
Sabumon, who gained fame through shows like Tharikida and later as the winner of Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 1, is known for his candid and often polarizing opinions. His journey from being a prank show host to a reality show winner and actor has been marked by controversies and outspoken commentary.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with his perspective, Sabumon’s statements once again highlight the ongoing debate about the ethics of violence and sensitive content in cinema.
