“It Was All As Lalettan Suggested” – Harishree Ashokan Shares His Experience with Mohanlal

Harishree Ashokan, a beloved actor in Malayalam cinema, has been entertaining audiences for decades with his comedic roles, and has also taken on serious characters in recent years. Known for his impeccable timing in comedy, Ashokan has appeared in some of the most iconic films in Malayalam cinema, often alongside legendary actors like Mohanlal.

In a recent interview, Ashokan shared his experiences working with Mohanlal, particularly in the film Baalettan, directed by V.M. Vinu. In this film, Ashokan played the role of Manikandan, the sidekick of Mohanlal’s character. Reflecting on his time working with Lalettan (Mohanlal), Ashokan spoke fondly of their collaboration on set.

Mohanlal’s Advice and Impact

Ashokan recalled a scene from Baalettan where the villagers speak to Mohanlal’s character, and how Lalettan had suggested certain actions for the scene. “Lalettan came up to me before the scene and said, ‘Whatever I do, you should do it too.’ I didn’t quite understand what he meant at the time,” Ashokan shared.

In the scene, Mohanlal’s character is seen adjusting his shirt and fixing his lungi, which Ashokan also had to replicate. It wasn’t until they were watching the film in a theater that Ashokan understood the impact of those actions, as the audience erupted in laughter. “Lalettan knows how comedy works, and how to make it effective,” he said, expressing his admiration for Mohanlal’s comedic sensibility.

Early Concerns About Action Scenes

Ashokan also reflected on his early days in the industry when he had doubts about performing action scenes, given his lighter physique. He confessed to having concerns about whether audiences would find it convincing if he were to beat up someone in a fight scene. To overcome this, he would often seek help from the action master, Mafia Shashi, and would request a stick to make the action sequences more believable. “I thought if I had a stick, I could hit people without much trouble,” Ashokan chuckled, recalling how Mafia Shashi would laugh every time he made this request.

Beloved Comedy Roles

Harishree Ashokan’s comedic roles, such as the lovable Ramana in Punjabi House and Sundaran in Parakkum Thalika, have left a lasting impression on Malayalam audiences. His ability to make people laugh effortlessly has earned him a permanent place in the hearts of moviegoers. Ashokan’s infectious humor and charm continue to make him one of the most cherished actors in Malayalam cinema.
