A big-budget pan-Indian movie titled Kathiravan, based on the life of social reformer Ayyankali, has been announced under the banner of Thara Productions. Revealed on Diwali, the film is expected to feature a leading Malayalam action hero in the role of Ayyankali. Produced by Jagathambi Krishna, this is Thara Productions’ debut venture, and it promises to be an action-heavy project with a high production value.
The movie is directed and shot by Arun Raj, with the story, screenplay, and dialogues by Pradeep K. Thamaramkulam. Though discussions about the film have generated considerable buzz, the director has kept additional details under wraps for now. Arun Raj confirmed that the renowned actor Mammootty will be taking on the role of Ayyankali, dispelling any doubts. He also expressed reluctance to address unnecessary speculations that have personally affected him, including social media comments targeting him based on his caste.
Arun Raj noted that this is his third film, and work on Kathiravan has already begun. He emphasized that the project aims to authentically portray Ayyankali’s life, based on years of in-depth research. Despite some controversies affecting Mammootty, the director expressed frustration over the unwarranted discussions around the film.
According to Arun Raj, Ayyankali was one of the foremost figures who uplifted Kerala society, and Kathiravan will bring his real-life struggles to the big screen. He hopes audiences will warmly embrace the film.
This is Arun Raj’s second directorial project following his award-winning debut film Edwin’s Name, for which he won an International Film Festival award for best cinematography. He also handled the cinematography for Welcome to Pandimala.
