The “Hasthalakshana Deepika,” a book of hand gestures, follows 24 Basic Mudras (hand gestures) that, in turn, guide Kathakali. Each Basic Mudra has additional symbols, using either single-hand (Asamyutha) mudras or double-hands (Samyutha). Altogether, these Mudras and their divisions make up a total of 470 symbols used in Kathakali.
